*UPDATE! View our Afterschool Kids Video.
Our program is in session every school day from September to June, from 2:15pm to 5:30pm. We serve sixty-five children, 45 elementary school age and 20 middle schoolers. We offer homework help, reading and math tutoring, art, music, sports, cooking classes, boys' and girls' clubs, field trips and other enrichment activities, along with a healthy meal.
We have three stated goals for our program:
- Children feel SAFE: kids are physically and emotionally safe. By participating in our program, children are safe from the dangers they face during unsupervised out-of-school time. Attention to safety helps prevent accidents, following our Love Contract, which calls for respect and fairness, helps prevent fights and name-calling.
- Children feel BIG: kids have a greater sense of themselves. Academic support and exposure to new activities help kids feel more competent, skilled, and successful. Leadership training and opportunities to exercise this leadership offer our youth a chance to feel their power to make changes in their neighborhood and lives.
- Children feel CONNECTED: kids feel connected to each other, staff and volunteers, and their neighborhood. Regular circles (discussion groups), weekend activities, and field trips help build these relationships and ties.
With the support of Generations, Inc., we have an in-depth and comprehensive literacy program for the younger students. In fall 2006 our volunteers will be trained in the TERC math curriculum (which is used in the Boston Public Schools) in order to improve the math and science learning we offer our students.
