Program Overview

The B-READY* after-school program is open on weekday afternoons
when the Boston Public Schools are in session.  We serve children and
teens at two sites, both located in Episcopal churches:

  • South End:  Opened in fall 2000, LEARN @ St. Stephen's is hosted
at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, located at 419 Shawmut
Avenue, and this year is serving up to 70 elementary school
children and 30 middle school youth.

  • Roxbury:  Opened in fall 2008, LEARN @ Lenox is hosted at the
Church of St. Augustine and St. Martin, located at 31 Lenox
Street, and this year is serving up to 40 elementary school children.

We always welcome new volunteers during the school year.  Check out
ways you can participate on our Get Involved page!

    Elementary School LEARN Program

LEARN stands for Leadership, Enrichment, Academics, Recreation and
Nurture.  Our elementary school program operates from 2:30 p.m.to 6:00
p.m.on school day afternoons. We offer homework help, reading and
math tutoring, art, music, sports, cooking classes, boys' and girls' clubs,
field trips and other enrichment activities, along with a healthy meal.

With the support of Generations, Inc. (an organization that trains seniors
in literacy training), we offer an in-depth and comprehensive literacy
program for the younger students. Many of our other volunteers are
trained in the TERC math curriculum (which is used in the Boston Public
Schools) and help students improve in their math and science learning.

    Middle School YLC Program

YLC stands for Youth Leadership Corps.  This special program for middle
schoolers operates from 2:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.on school day
afternoons.  In addition to offering all the components of the elementary
school LEARN program, the YLC emphasizes learning, leadership training,
    and life skills development.

In addition to fun activities like movie nights and ice skating, the YLC
offers middle school students new and different experiences such as:

  • Chef-instructed cooking classes  with Kids Can Cook.
  • Field trips to the Artists for Humanity 's Epicenter, which includes
a gallery, photography studio, wood shop, and graphics design lab.
  • Theater-related games at the Citi Performing Arts Center with their
    high school interns.
  • Weekly workshops with Renewal House on bullying, leadership,
    healthy relationships, confidence and self-esteem.
  • Drama workshops with Emerson College Drama, led by college
    students.
  • Squash workshops with Squashbusters  at Northeastern, led by
    high school students.

For ninth graders, there is our new YLC Plus, which offers opportunities
to be part of the program and also to gain work experience.  Members
focus on developing leadership skills by working with the Elementary
School LEARN program three days a week and then enjoy YLC program
    activities two days an week.
