Summer Kids

B-SAFE Program
(Bishop's Summer Academic and Fun Enrichment)

Our Mission

We want our children to feel SAFE physically and emotionally. Our staff are trained in First Aid and CPR and go through a Safe Churches Training offered by the Episcopal Diocese. Our staff also are trained in anti-bullying techniques and all children and staff sign our “Love Contract” which is our code of conduct for the summer.

We want our children to feel BIG. We provide opportunities for kids to succeed and be rewarded in all sorts of activities: academics, art, music, and sports. By providing outstanding programs in reading, writing, and math we prepare kids to succeed in school.

We want our children to feel CONNECTED. Through small groups, low staff-to-camper ratios, and team building activities, we create tight groups that foster friendships and trusting relationships. Through neighborhood field trips, we learn about local heroes and history, building connections to Boston and the South End.

We want to love & educate the whole child!

Academics

There are three parts to our learning activities:

Word: a multi-level reading and writing curriculum designed especially for the children of St. Stephen’s. Stories and writing assignments are selected so that kids can apply their learning to their lives, as well as improve skills for school.

Numbers Club: a math curriculum where kids can practice problem solving in a fun environment.

DEAR time: For thirty minutes every day after lunch, everyone Drops Everything And Reads. Our extensive library allows kids to pick books at their level about topics of interest.

Athletics

Boating at Jamaica Pond is just one of the many exciting outdoor and sports oriented activities we do.

Every week includes:
1. Swimming twice at the Blackstone pool
2. Indoor and outdoor sports led by our athletic director
3. At least four field trips

Field trips include outdoor games at various locations around Boston (Larz Anderson Park, World’s End, George’s Island in the Boston Harbor), local museums (Harvard Museum of Natural History, Museum of Fine Arts, MIT Museum of Science), and visits to interesting locations (Mapparium, Deer Island Water Treatment Plant).

Art

Our visual arts program is led by a professional artist and includes mural painting, watercolor, Chinese brush painting, bas relief self portraits, and clay sculptures.

Our music program includes choir singing and drumming rhythms.

The summer ends with an art show and public performance for parents and community members to show off the work and accomplishments of the summer.
